About Dhu al-Hijjah

Dhu al-Hijjah is the last month of the Islamic year and one of the four sacred months. The Prophet ﷺ said that there are no days in which righteous deeds are more beloved to Allah than its first ten days (Sahih al-Bukhari).

The rites of Hajj take place from the 8th (the Day of Tarwiyah) to the 13th. The 9th is the Day of Arafah, when pilgrims stand on the plain of Arafat; for those not on pilgrimage, fasting it expiates the sins of the previous and the coming year (Sahih Muslim).

Eid al-Adha, the Festival of Sacrifice, begins on the 10th and commemorates Ibrahim's (Abraham's) readiness to sacrifice his son. Animals are sacrificed from after the Eid prayer until sunset on the 13th (the 12th in the Hanafi and Maliki schools); the 11th to 13th are the Days of Tashreeq, on which fasting is not allowed.
