Muharram محرم
"Forbidden, sacred" · Sacred month
Muharram 1449 AH begins on Sunday, 6 June 2027 and ends on Sunday, 4 July 2027 according to the Umm al-Qura calendar.
About Muharram
Muharram opens the Hijri year. Its name means "forbidden": it is one of the four sacred months mentioned in the Quran (9:36), in which fighting was prohibited. The Prophet ﷺ called it "the month of Allah" and said that the best fasting after Ramadan is fasting in Muharram (Sahih Muslim).
The 10th of Muharram is the Day of Ashura. The Prophet ﷺ fasted it and encouraged Muslims to do so, describing it as the day Allah saved Musa (Moses) and the Children of Israel from Pharaoh. It is recommended to fast the 9th as well, or the 11th, alongside the 10th. Ashura is also the anniversary of the martyrdom of Husayn ibn Ali, the Prophet's grandson, at Karbala in 61 AH, which Shia Muslims commemorate with mourning.
The Hijri era itself is counted from the year of the Prophet's migration (Hijra) from Makkah to Madinah in 622 CE. The second caliph, Umar ibn al-Khattab, adopted this era and kept Muharram as the first month of the year.
