How to Use the Hijri Date Converter

Choose Hijri → Gregorian or Gregorian → Hijri, then pick the day, month and year. The result appears straight away with the weekday, any Islamic observance on that date and how long ago (or how far ahead) it is from today. The ⇄ button switches direction and keeps the same day.

Use it to find the Gregorian date of a Hijri date in an old document, to see your date of birth in the Islamic calendar, or to plan around Ramadan and the Eids.

How the Conversion Works

Dates are not converted directly from one calendar to another. The converter first turns your date into a Julian Day Number, a running count of days used by astronomers, and then reads that number with the rules of the target calendar. Using one shared day count avoids the errors of month-by-month arithmetic between calendars with different month lengths and leap rules.

For Hijri dates from 1356 to 1500 AH (1937–2077 CE) the converter uses the published Umm al-Qura tables of Saudi Arabia, in which each month's length is fixed in advance from astronomical criteria. Outside that range it falls back to the arithmetical (tabular) Islamic calendar. Read more in how to convert Hijri dates to Gregorian.

The Two Calendars

  • Hijri (Islamic): a lunar calendar of 12 months of 29 or 30 days, 354 or 355 days a year. It counts from the Hijra of 622 CE and sets the dates of Ramadan, Hajj and the Eids.
  • Gregorian: the international solar calendar of 365 or 366 days, introduced in 1582 as a reform of the Julian calendar.

Because the Hijri year is about 11 days shorter than the Gregorian year, Islamic dates move earlier through the seasons and the Hijri year count grows faster: about 103 Hijri years pass in 100 Gregorian years. Subtracting 622 from a Gregorian year does not give the Hijri year.

Frequently Asked Questions

Choose "Hijri → Gregorian", then pick the Hijri day, month and year; the result appears instantly. HijriTime uses the Umm al-Qura tables (1356–1500 AH) and an arithmetical Islamic calendar outside that range.

Gregorian dates are exact. A converted Hijri date matches the Umm al-Qura calendar of Saudi Arabia; in countries that start months by local moon sighting the actual date can differ by one day.

Yes. Enter your date of birth: the result shows the time elapsed and the total number of days. A Hijri year is about 11 days shorter, so your age in Hijri years is about 3% higher than in Gregorian years.
