What is the Hijri (Islamic) Calendar?
The Hijri calendar is a lunar calendar used by Muslims worldwide. It has 12 months, and each month begins with the new moon. Because lunar months are usually 29 or 30 days, the Hijri year is shorter than the Gregorian year. This is why Ramadan and other Islamic months move earlier each year in the Gregorian calendar.
Why can the Hijri date differ between countries?
In many regions, the start of a Hijri month depends on moon sighting, while other regions rely on astronomical calculations.
