About Shawwal

Shawwal begins with Eid al-Fitr, the Festival of Breaking the Fast. Before the Eid prayer, every Muslim who can afford it pays Zakat al-Fitr so that the poor can celebrate too. Fasting on the day of Eid is not allowed.

The Prophet ﷺ said that whoever fasts Ramadan and follows it with six days of Shawwal, it is as if they fasted the whole year (Sahih Muslim). The six days may be fasted consecutively or spread across the month.

Shawwal is also the first of the months of Hajj; the Battle of Uhud took place in Shawwal of 3 AH.
