About Rabi al-Awwal

Rabi al-Awwal means "the first spring"; the name dates from a time when the lunar months were still tied to the seasons.

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was born in this month in the Year of the Elephant (around 570 CE). The most widely cited date is the 12th, although historians also give other days. He arrived in Madinah after the Hijra in Rabi al-Awwal, and he passed away in this month in 11 AH.

Many Muslims mark the 12th as Mawlid al-Nabi with gatherings, poetry and sermons about the Prophet's life, and it is a public holiday in many countries. Other scholars hold that the day has no special observance, so practice differs from community to community.
