About Rajab

Rajab is one of the four sacred months (Quran 9:36). Its name comes from a root meaning "to respect", and the pre-Islamic Arabs also kept it free of fighting.

Many Muslims commemorate the Isra and Mi'raj on the 27th of Rajab: the Prophet's night journey from Makkah to Jerusalem and his ascension through the heavens, when the five daily prayers were prescribed. The exact date is not settled in the early sources, so some scholars do not tie the event to a specific day.

With Sha'ban and Ramadan, Rajab is often treated as the start of a three-month season of increased worship leading up to Ramadan.
